The diagnosis of absence epilepsy may be established on the basis of brief spells of staring or eyelid fluttering, precipitation by hyperventilation, and characteristic EEG findings.
Seizures resolved completely after beginning treatment with valproic acid 250 mg BID and have not recurred during 18 months of treatment.
