The triad of generalized tonic-clonic seizures, absence seizures, and myoclonic jerks comprise juvenile myoclonic epilepsy, a genetically mediated epilepsy which typically presents during adolescence. Although the diagnosis may be established on clinical grounds in many cases, the presence of generalized 4-6 cycle per second spike-wave activity on EEG is supportive.
The patient has experienced no further tonic-clonic or absence seizures since beginning treatment with valproic acid, although myoclonic jerks (primarily upon awakening) continue on an occasional basis.
