The diagnosis of complex partial seizure can be made largely on clinical grounds. Asymmetric motor manifestations (e.g. facial grimace, post-ictal weakness unilaterally) suggest that the seizure began focally. The presence of altered consciousness establishes the event as complex partial rather than simple partial.
The patient was started on carbamazepine, which was discontinued after 8 days due to rash. She remains seizure-free 3 months after beginning treatment with the investigational drug topiramate.
