- Sub-committee review: - This subcommittee reviewed several models available. Many seemed
inappropriate as they embodied a negative and punitive approach. The group believes that a
code that sets expectations and calls students to live up to them is to be preferred.
Examples cited include Ohio State University. Some committee members dissented and
questioned whether competitive medical students could be trusted to do such things as
monitor their own exams. Most of the committee thought that such an approach was
worthwhile. It was further suggested that practices such as grading on a curve places
students into competition with each other and fosters a lack of trustworthiness. Such
practices might need to be reconsidered if an honor code is implemented.
The subcommittee suggested that the
group seek to go beyond the traditional honor code approach and integrate their work into
the statement on professionalism
- Integrated Curriculum -
Mary L. provided a list of required courses and lectures related to professionalism. The chair requested that this group also outline
the voluntary service opportunities provided at SSOM.
Review of the work of the remaining two subcommittees will
resume at the Tues., 11/14/00 meeting.
Meeting adjourned at approx. 6:40 p.m.
