Urinary Bladder

• Location : 

  • When empty, it is completely within the pelvis. 

  • As it fills, it extends superiorly.

• Size: 

  • Size is variable, depending on the degree of distension. 

• Neck of bladder: 

  • Lies 3-4 cm behind lower part of symphysis pubis and rests on the prostate in the male. 

  • It has the urethral orifice.

• Relationship : 

  • Anterior: Symphysis pubis
  • Posterior: 
    • Male: Rectovesical pouch, Anterior wall of Rectum, Seminal vesicle, Vas Deference
    • Female: Vesico-urterine pouch, Uterus, Anterior wall of Vagina
  • Superior surface of the bladder is covered by the peritoneum. 
    • This extends posteriorly to the rectum and forms the rectovescical pouch in the male.
    • In the female, it forms the vesico-uterine pouch.

  • Ureters enter bladder posteriorly through opposite corners
