Breast exam workshop

ORIENTATION FOR OB/GYN CLERKSHIP CLINICAL SKILLS EXERCISE

Students should first report to room 399 at their start time for a short orientation.  Student will then proceed to room 330. It is important that the exercise starts and ends on time because the Family Medicine clerkship exercise starts at 5:45 pm. and time is needed to set up for the next exercise.

Student Task:

You are a 3rd year student on the OB-GYN Clerkship rotation. It is your task to interview and examine an asymptomatic female patient in the ambulatory clinic for breast disease.

Part 1: The standardized patient interview (10 minutes)
Part 2: The standardized patient breast examination (10 minutes)
Part 3: The breast model examination (lump detection) (20 minutes) you will be given 5 minutes to examine each model and record your findings.

The SP encounter is 20 minutes total. A CSC staff member will knock twice. You should not respond to the first knock. That is your cue that you have 5 minutes remaining to the SP encounter. At the second knock the CSC monitor will announce that your time is up. Please close the encounter and exit the room. CSC staff will direct you to one of the rooms to examine a model. When the SP completes her paperwork she will invite you back into the room for feedback. CSC staff will direct you.

The SP's will already be on the exam table and in a patient gown.
