Student Evaluations and Grading
- Every student will be evaluated for the clinical competencies listed on the
Inpatient Form (Ward Service Attending, Consult Service Attending) and
Outpatient Form (Clinic Attending), assisted by the service Neurology
residents, and presented to the student in a face-to-face feedback manner.
As the first two weeks of Ward or Consult Service end, the student must
give the Attending the form, and arrange a mutual meeting time to discuss
it. Since the two-week student evaluation form does count toward the
student's grade, it is not informal feedback, but still provides suggestions
for improvement for the remainder of the clerkship. The other Consult or
Ward Service evaluation is given after the fourth week, as is the Outpatient
Clinic evaluation. Each student must also give their attending a paper
copy of their on-line patient log at the time of their 2nd and 4th week
evaluation, which the attending will evaluate and sign. Deliver the 2nd
week evaluation form to the Educational Coordinator as soon as it is
completed and hand in the 4th week forms on the final examination day.
Evaluation forms may be printed off the Neurology webpage. Any
student not having their directly observed neurological exam checked off
by the Clinic Attending on the Outpatient Form needs to see the
Clerkship Director to arrange remediation.
- Attendings will select "pass," "concerns," or "fail" regarding the student's
ability for each competency on the evaluation form. A "concerns" rating
relates to significant issues or problems for that competency, but not to the
degree of a failure. "Concerns" ratings and comments will be relayed to
the Stritch School of Medicine Competency Council for further
assessment and monitoring of any persistent trends across clerkships. A
"fail" rating for any competency creates a failure grade for the clerkship,
with remediation arranged by the Clerkship Director and Educational
Deans. Each attending also writes summative comments on the student
evaluation form, which may include specific examples of any exceptional
clinical skills, projects or personal attributes of that student.
If the time for hospital ward or consult rounds becomes limited, patient
cases may be only discussed orally with the team. Any student desiring
more feedback on their written H&Ps or consultations should E mail the
clerkship director with the date of that report and the patient's medical
record number (keeping the patient name confidential).
- On the 100-question final examination, any student scoring less than 60%
does not meet expectations, and receives an "incomplete" grade for the
clerkship. This grade is changed to P (pass), if the student successfully
retakes and passes another version of the 100 question exam one month
later. Failure (less than 60%) on the retest leads to clerkship repetition or
similar remediation from the Clerkship Director.
- Exam Day is the last day of the clerkship, when there are no patient care
responsibilities. Students are dismissed from patient care and service
duties at noon of the day before Exam Day. On Exam Day, students will
take two on-line examinations: (1) a patient case vignette videotape
examination, and (2) a 100 multiple-choice question test. The patient case
vignette videotape exam consists of 25 on-line, multiple choice questions
pertaining to 12 videotaped patients from the Practical Neurology DVD
Review, accessible on-line (Neurology Clerkship webpage). One hour is
given for this test, which constitutes a standardized clinical skills exercise.
Please bring your earphones for this test. The 100 question examination
consists of written patient cases or scenarios, in National Step Exam
(Boards) format, some accompanied by CT or MRI images, patient
graphics or EEG tracings. Three hours is given for this test, which covers
the major aspects and diseases of Neurology detailed below. All exam
questions are linked to the Neurology Clerkship Learning Objectives.
After completing the final examinations, each student must complete an
on-line evaluation of the clerkship. Failure to do so will generate a
comment under "Concerns" for Professionalism in the student profile.
- The final Neurology Clerkship grade is calculated as follows:
40% of grade = NBME multiple-choice question exam score
15% of grade=
Vignette video exam score
40% of grade = Clinical Perfrmance score
5% of
grade= Professionalism, attendace at the lectures (missing lecture 20 points
deduction, late for the lecture 10 points deduction)
"Pass" or "concerns" ratings, for all the listed clinical competencies on the
inpatient and outpatient clinical evaluation forms, without "fail" ratings
Total final clerkship grades of 90-100 points are Honors (H), 80-89 points
are High Pass (HP) and 60-79 points are Pass (P). A final grade less than
60 points will be remediated at the discretion of the Clerkship Director and
Educational Deans.
