This is an alternate content page containing a Hot Spot Explore Activity. It has opened in a new window.
The activity has an image with defined hotspot areas. The hotspot areas in the image are labeled as:
Stria Medullaris Thalami, fiber bundle containing efferent fibers from the septal nuclei, lateral preoptico-hypothalamic region, and anterior thalamic nuclei. Terminates in the Habenular Nuclei.
Caudate Nucleus
Stria Terminalis
Insula
Reticular Nucleus of the Thalamus
Extreme Capsule. Lateral to the External Capsule. Provides bidirectional communication between such areas as the claustrum and the insular cortex, and the inferior frontal gyrus (Broca’s area) and the middle-posterior portion of the superior temporal gyrus (Wernicke's area). Its fibers are near to but can be distinguished by MRI tractography from adjacent fiber bundles such as the uncinate fasciculus, the external capsule, the arcuate fascicle, and the medial, inferior and superior longitudinal fascicles. It is most easily visible in a horizontal section, just lateral to the claustrum.
External Capusle, its fibers run between the most lateral segment of the lentiform nucleus and the claustrum. The external capsule is a route for cholinergic fibers from the basal forebrain to the cerebral cortex.
Claustrum, located laterally to the external capsule, connected to many corical areas, considered to be part of the basal ganglia and plays an important role in timing.
