Note:
The dorsal horns of the gray matter at this level are often "cut off" from the ventral horns by the
decussating Corticospinal Tract fibers. Before crossing here in the lower medulla, these fibers at more rostral levels run in the ventrally located Pyramids.
At this level the Pyramids (Pyramidal Tracts) have disappeared due to the fibers crossing into a dorsolateral position on the contralateral side of the cord where they run in the Lateral Funiculus as the Corticospinal tract (CST). Fibers which do not cross continue caudally as a small bundle near the ventral midline known as the anterior Corticospinal Tract (CSTa).
At this level there are no more ventral roots; however, a homolog, the Spinal Accessory Nerve (XI) is present and a few rootlets can be seen on the lower left of the section. This nerve takes a lateral course from the ventral horn region to reach the periphery of the medulla oblongata and innervates the sternocleidomastoid and trapezius muscles.
