Characteristics of Pleuritic Pain
- Localized:
The pleura is supplied by a rich extensive network of intercostal nerves. Hence, it tends
to be localized. Patients usually point to the site of pain with their finger.
- Sharp:
- Worsens on Deep Breathing:
Stretching of pleura causes extreme pain. Deep breathing, coughing, laughing and sneezing
are a few maneuvers associated with worsening of pain.
Caution:
The characteristics of pleuritic pain are not specific for pleura. Similar descriptions
are to be anticipated from any chest wall lesions. Rib fractures will cause pain similar
to pleurisy.
