Nurse Mentor Program
General Description
In collaboration with the West Suburban Hospital in
neighboring Oak Park, PCM 1 will pair you with a practicing nurse who will take
you to the floors of the hospital. You will see patients on nursing “rounds”,
along with attending a ˝ h education meeting.
Objectives and Outcomes
- To foster a professional relationship between nursing students, nurses and
first year medical students
- To begin to understand the training and role of nursing professionals on
the health care team
- To begin to understand the expertise and training of nursing professionals
- To provide students an opportunity to interact with their future
colleagues on a professional basis.
- To nurture inspiration, motivation and enthusiasm for a career in
medicine.
- To provide clinical reinforcement to the pre-clerkship curriculum.
- To improve observation skills; the ability to assess the environment,
select critical cues, attend to what is seen and transfer to subsequent
interactions.
- To begin to understand the complexities of the medical profession.
- To observe the importance of good communication skills with establishing a
good doctor-patient relationship.
Requirements
Participation in this program will be on a
volunteer basis.
