Nurse Mentor Program

 

General Description

 

In collaboration with the West Suburban Hospital in neighboring Oak Park, PCM 1 will pair you with a practicing nurse who will take you to the floors of the hospital.  You will see patients on nursing “rounds”, along with attending a ˝ h education meeting.

 

Objectives and Outcomes

  1. To foster a professional relationship between nursing students, nurses and first year medical students
  2. To begin to understand the training and role of nursing professionals on the health care team
  3. To begin to understand the expertise and training of nursing professionals
  4. To provide students an opportunity to interact with their future colleagues on a professional basis.
  5. To nurture inspiration, motivation and enthusiasm for a career in medicine.
  6. To provide clinical reinforcement to the pre-clerkship curriculum.
  7. To improve observation skills; the ability to assess the environment, select critical cues, attend to what is seen and transfer to subsequent interactions.
  8. To begin to understand the complexities of the medical profession.
  9. To observe the importance of good communication skills with establishing a good doctor-patient relationship.

Requirements

 

Participation in this program will be on a volunteer basis.
