Loyola University Medical Education Network Step 3 -
Dissection of the Posterior Triangle

  1. As you continue to clean the posterior triangle find the inferior belly of the omohyoid muscle, transverse cervical artery and vein, suprascapular artery, anterior scalene muscle, middle scalene muscle, and roots of brachial plexus passing out between anterior and middle scalenes.
Hint: The suprascapular artery and vein are covered by the clavicle. Carefully slide your dental forceps along the undersurface of the bone to free the vessels.

  2. The branches of the thyorocervical trunk are best seen on the side where you removed the clavicle. This dissection shows the thyrocervical trunk, suprascapular a., transverse cervical a., inferior thyroid a. and the phrenic n. passing anterior to the anterior scalene m.
