Loyola University Medical Education Network Step 3 -
Dissection of the Posterior Thigh and Leg

  1. Clean the and separate the muscles of the anterior compartment as seen in this dissection. These muscles include the tibialis anterior, extensor hallucis longus and extensor digitorum longus muscles.

  2. Separate the peroneus longus and peroneus brevis muscles in the lateral compartment.

  3. Complete your dissection by following the common peroneal nerve where it winds around the head of the fibula and pierces the peroneus longus m. The superficial peroneal branch exits from under the peroneus longus about half-way down the leg, the deep peroneal branch passes down the anterior compartment together with the anterior tibial artery before passing out onto the dorsum of the foot.
NOTE: The anterior tibial artery continues as the dorsalis pedis artery.
