M.D./Ph.D. Program
Program Content

The MD/PhD dual degree program can be completed in seven years. This includes the four years required for the medical curriculum, interspersed with approximately three years of graduate and research studies toward the Ph.D. degree. The first four semesters focus on the medical school curriculum. A key component of this curriculum is the course entitled "Patient Centered Medicine," which includes training in clinical skills, physical diagnosis, and other topics that provide the training necessary to begin the clerkship experience. During the first two years students also are encouraged to participate in their graduate department or program seminars and journal clubs, as time permits. Summer rotations in various laboratories are helpful in preparation for the selection of a Ph.D. research advisor.

During the last year of their Ph.D. studies, M.D./Ph.D. students are required to participate in Patient Centered Medicine for the purpose of facilitating transition into the remaining four semesters of the clinical curriculum and clerkships. It is expected that all requirements for the Ph.D. degree be completed before the student returns to clinical studies.

In order to complete the M.D./Ph.D. Program, students are expected to satisfy all the requirements for the M.D. degree as described in the medical school catalogue, and for the Ph.D. degree as specified by the graduate school. The actual graduate curriculum for each student will be developed by the student’s graduate faculty advisor, according to departmental or program guidelines and in consultation with Graduate Program advisor. The amount of time required for completing the program is kept to a minimum by providing credit toward graduate degree requirements for relevant integrated medical school courses taken in the first two years of medical school. A limited number of medical school courses may be accepted toward the Ph.D. degree, as approved by the graduate department or program, in conjunction with the graduate school.

Both degrees are conferred at the end of the entire course of training.
