M.D./Ph.D.
Program
Admission Requirements and Application Procedure
Applicants must have earned a Bachelor's or Master's degree, with evidence of a
strong scientific background and research experience, to be considered eligible for the
program. An excellent undergraduate scholastic record with a "B+" average or
better is expected. MCAT composite score should be at (or close to) 30+ in the Verbal
Reasoning, Biological Science, and Physical Science categories. Three (3) letters of
recommendation addressing the potential of the candidate to conduct independent research
and to excel in academic medicine are required.
Prospective
students must apply to the Stritch School of Medicine through
AMCAS (http://www.aamc.org). Applicants
to the Medical School must be U.S. citizens or hold a permanent resident visa at the time
of application. Applicants who have taken all of their undergraduate course work outside
the United States or Canada must complete at least one year of full-time study in an
accredited American college or university before applying to the Stritch School of
Medicine. Applicants enrolled in a graduate program must complete that program before
beginning medical school. If this is not possible, graduate students must withdraw from
their graduate program before applying for admission to the Stritch School of Medicine.
Additional information on the Medical School application process can be obtained by
calling the Admissions Office at (708) 216-3229.
Applicants
must also apply to the Graduate School. Application to Medical School and the Graduate
School can be done concurrently. The application to the Graduate School portion of the
program is at https://app.applyyourself.com/?id=loyolamc.
You must check the MD/PhD box in the Degree Sought section of the application. Letters of
recommendation and transcripts are not transferable from the medical school application,
and must be sent to:
Graduate & Professional Enrollment Management
820 North Michigan Avenue, Suite 800
Chicago, IL 60611
312-915-8950
Request forms for transcripts and letters of recommendation are downloadable once you
start the application process at this link.
The application fee is waived for applicants applying to the dual degree program. MCAT
scores are accepted in place of GRE scores. GRE scores should be submitted if the exam was
taken by the applicant. MCAT scores will be forwarded to the Graduate School by the
M.D./Ph.D. program office.
Application
to the program by medical students already accepted into the medical school program must
be made by the end of the first semester of the second year of medical school. These students must have the approval of the
Associate Dean for Student Affairs before their application can be reviewed by the
M.D./Ph.D. Steering Committee and the Graduate School.
The
medical school will notify the M.D./Ph.D. office upon contacting applicants for
interviews. At this time, if possible, interviews will be set up for the applicant to
interview with members of the M.D./Ph.D. Steering Committee and the Graduate Program
Admissions committee. All 3 sets of interviews are completed in a 2-day period. In the
event that the interviews cannot be coordinated, other arrangements for interviewing will
be made.
Acceptance into the M.D./Ph.D.
Program is contingent upon acceptance into the Medical School. Applicants must also be
accepted by the Graduate School on the recommendation of one of the basic science
departments or Ph.D. granting programs at the Stritch School of Medicine. If acceptance is
granted into the Medical School and Graduate School, the M.D./Ph.D. Steering Committee
will review the applicant's file for consideration of acceptance into the M.D./Ph.D.
program. It is
possible that the applicant is accepted by the medical school but not by the MD/PhD
program. In this case the applicant can join
the MD program directly.
