M.D./Ph.D. Program
Administration

The M.D./Ph.D. Steering Committee, chaired by the Program Director, administers the program. The Steering Committee consists of representatives from the basic science and clinical departments of the medical school. The Associate Dean of Student Affairs, the Assistant Dean of Admissions of the medical school and the Associate Dean of the graduate school, at the Medical Center, serve as ex-officio members of the M.D./Ph.D. Steering Committee. The M.D./Ph.D. program coordinator staffs the program office.

The Steering Committee routinely administers and coordinates a number of administrative functions. These include: interviewing and selecting students for admission to the program; evaluating, each semester, the overall progress of the students; serving as a liaison between the student and the medical school and graduate school administrations; serving as the M.D./Ph.D. students’ advocate during their entire training period in the program; and helping to develop and maintain recruitment material for the program.

Each student will be assigned an M.D./Ph.D. Program Faculty Advisor who carefully monitors and evaluates the student’s progress, for the entire time that the student is in the program. The M.D./Ph.D. Program Faculty Advisors are also members of the M.D./Ph.D. Steering Committee, and the Advisor Program of the Stritch School of Medicine. The Faculty Advisors will monitor student grades and research progress. They will meet annually with the students; more often if necessary. The Faculty Advisors will report back to the Program Director and the Steering Committee. Each new M.D./Ph.D. student will also be assigned a Student Advisor. The Student Advisors are senior M.D./Ph.D. students who will help their advisees navigate their way through the program.

At the end of each academic year, the Steering Committee will evaluate each student on the basis of their grades and performance, and will forward their recommendation to the Dean of the Medical School, for approval for continuation in the program.
