The Graduate School
A Message from the Associate Dean of the Graduate School at the Medical Center
Frederick H. Wezeman, Ph.D.
Professor, Orthopaedic Surgery and
Associate Dean of the Graduate School
Where better to prepare yourself in the biomedical sciences than Loyola University Chicago at the Medical Center, a world-class university with one of the highest rated medical centers in the Midwest! Chicago is home to seven major medical schools and their cutting edge medical research. Endless opportunities exist for our students through the local convenience of interactions at these institutions that will enrich your state-of-the-art learning experience at Loyola.
At Loyola University Medical Center you will be trained by experienced faculty members who care deeply about your education and professional development. In the Jesuit tradition, the faculties of our programs focus on the development of the whole person and service to others. We graduate only the finest examples of competency in subject matter and research ability, which have a thirst for scientific knowledge and truth. I invite you to become part of our world of specialized biomedical training.
This is an exciting time in biomedical research paralleled by equally exciting changes in graduate education. The graduate faculty created a first semester Core Curriculum in the Biomedical Sciences in which all incoming students register. The four courses are a highly integrated introduction to the basic biomedical sciences and prepare the student for advanced coursework and research training. Research is highly interdisciplinary; our curriculum now supports that and anchors students in an integrated introductory knowledge base.
New programs continue to evolve in the Graduate School at Loyola University Medical Center. The IPBS program does not require the choice of a specific program at the time of application. Selected students will enter the IPBS and complete Core Curriculum and lab rotation requirements chosen from among any of the funded faculty of the Graduate School at LUMC. Before the end of the first year the student will choose a program and mentor for completion of the degree requirements.
The hallmark of a Loyola education is to prepare people to lead extraordinary lives. The Graduate School's mission at the Medical Center is to prepare leaders in research and academia. The Graduate Faculty is dedicated to the personal and professional development of their students. The rigorous intellectual environment is informed by our commitment to serving both community and world in keeping with Jesuit values.
I hope you will share our enthusiasm for scientific discovery and commitment to excellence. Explore with us the world of biomedical science and basic and translational research as we work to solve the mysteries of life and disease and expand the frontiers of fundamental and applied science. Become a part of the Loyola experience, one that will transform your life.
