Diagnostic Imaging: Overview

Historically, diagnostic imaging has been used in the evaluation of atypical clinical presentation and complications of appendicitis.

Plain radiographic examination of the abdomen and barium enema were formerly the primary diagnostic modalities used to evaluate patients for clinically suspected appendicitis. Currently, graded compression ultrasound and computerized axial tomography (CT) are generally available and are more commonly used in making this assessment.
