Malignant fibrous histiocytoma of the Neck

Loyola University Medical Center

This lesion was a moist, erythematous nodule. Malignant fibrous histiocytomas are not particularly common, but still represent the most common soft-tissue sarcoma in middle-aged and older adults. Deeper lesions have a 4-year survival rate of less than 50%. Superficial lesions, like the one above, have a 4 year survival rate of >50%. This lesion could easily be mistaken for a pyogenic granuloma, which is a moist, easily bleeding nodule which is commonly seen following minor skin trauma.
