Objective
Learning goal
You will be able to identify the means by which Clostridium, Listeria,
Diphtheria, and Neisseria meningitides cause infections, as well as understand their
diagnosis and management.
Enabling objectives
To achieve the goal of this problem solving session you will be able to:
- Identify the site(s) of infection with Clostridium perfringens, recite its
pathogenesis and virulence factors, identify its morphologic features, recognize its
clinical manifestations, and know the principles of management of the disease it causes.
- Describe the pathogenesis of Listeria monocytogenes, identify the sites of
infection, and recognize the hosts that are predisposed to infection, identify its
morphologic and growth characteristics, and know the pharmacologic principles of
treatment.
- Describe the epidemiology of Corynebacterium diphtheria and susceptible hosts
know the pathogenic and virulence characteristics of the organism, describe the clinical
characteristics of the disease caused by the organism, and recite the therapy of the
disease.
- Identify the sites infected with Neisseria meningitides, the mechanisms of
adherence of this organism to epithelial cells, recognize the clinical manifestations
caused by this organism, and identify the morphologic and other features used in the
laboratory diagnosis of disease caused by this organism.
