OBJECTIVES (at the end of this session, the student should be able to...):

Identify the need for palliative and hospice care, explain similarities and differences between the two, and explain the concept of suffering and its role in understanding quality of end of life care
Explain an approach to discussions with patients and their families that focuses on goals rather than specific treatments
Outline important steps in having a conversation to negotiate care goals with a patient and/or family
Identify racial, cultural, social and other factors important to determining preferences for end of life care among African American patients and how this understanding can allow you to approach all patients in a way that is culturally appropriate
Describe strategies for effective cross-cultural communication
Describe the typical path to death in the last hours of life and potential complications
