Learning Objectives for
Dissection of the Nasal Cavity and Nasopharynx

The dissection of the nasal cavity is accomplished by bisecting the head down to the tongue.

Basic concepts:
You may wish to review the basic concepts for the head and neck at this time. The link opens a new window which you will need to close to return to this page.

Specific Learning Objectives:

  1. Describe the passage of air.
  2. Describe the components and distribution of each cranial nerve.
  3. Recall the divisions of the autonomic system into parasympathetic and sympathetic systems, and the distributions of each component.
  4. Identify anatomic structures in radiographic studies including X-ray, CT scans and MRI films.

Difficult parts of the dissection:

  1. Bisecting the head living the nasal septum on one side requires both skill and luck. See Step 1.
  2. Exposing the pterygopalatine fossa and palatine canal requires careful chiseling. See Step 4 for detailed instructions.
