Learning Objectives for
Dissection of the Nasal Cavity and Nasopharynx
The dissection of the nasal cavity is accomplished by bisecting the head down to the
tongue.
Basic concepts:
You may wish to review
the basic concepts for the head and neck at this time. The link opens a new window which you will need to close
to return to this page.
Specific Learning Objectives:
- Describe the passage of air.
- Describe the components and distribution of each cranial nerve.
- Recall the divisions of the autonomic system into parasympathetic and sympathetic systems,
and the distributions of each component.
- Identify anatomic structures in radiographic studies including X-ray, CT scans and MRI films.
Difficult parts of the dissection:
- Bisecting the head living the nasal septum on one side requires both skill and
luck. See Step 1.
- Exposing the pterygopalatine fossa and palatine canal requires careful chiseling.
See Step 4 for detailed instructions.
