This step is included in the physical exam even though it is a procedure, as it is an integral part of the rectal exam.
Withdraw your finger and test any retained stool fecal matter for occult blood.
Open the Guaiac testing kit and spread a thin film of stool onto the designated area. Close the cover and apply two drops of solution onto the control and specimen areas. Observe the change of color.
Follow instructions on kit for evaluation of results.
Caution:
The current recommendation is to defer to three stools for occult blood testing. There may be some injury and stool may test positive for blood during the rectal exam.
