The patient should be lying flat with arms at his side and relaxed. Observe for:
Contour of the abdomen
Skin and subcutaneous tissue
Umbilicus
Peristalsis and pulsations
Stand on right side and view the abdomen tangentially to visualize peristalsis.
Normal:
The contour of the abdomen can vary.
The umbilicus is in mid-line.
In thin individuals, the epigastric pulsation and occasional gentle peristalsis may be visible.
