Definition

Pulmonary abscess is a localized area of liquefactive necrosis of the lung. This would then include necrotizing gram negative and gram positive pneumonias eg. Klebsiella, Staph, Pseudomonas etc. However, by convention we reserve the term lung abscess for necrotizing anaerobic pneumonia.
