Line up your syringe and needle with the artery and enter it between your index and middle finger. Make sure that the bevelled edge is facing towards the heart to facilitate blood flow. Plunge the needle and attempt to go through the artery and beyond.

Now, gently withdraw the syringe a few millimeters at a time and wait to see whether it will fill with blood. Once the needle re-enters the lumen of the artery, blood will spontaneously fill the syringe in a pulsatile manner.
