Session Outline

Goals:
  1. Know the relevant anatomy and physiology as pertains to the examination of the heart.
  2. Know the basic mechanisms for the generation of heart sounds and murmurs, and how to auscultate for them.

Session Objectives Teaching Methods Time
1. Describe the relevant anatomy and physiology as pertains to the examination of the heart. Lecture - highlight the major concepts for the examination of the heart. 50 min.
2. Perform steps 35, 36, 37 and 39 of the BSE. Small group discussion and demonstration 
  1. Co-facilitator leads a group discussion to review the major  concepts learned from the readings and lecture.
  2. Co-facilitator demonstrates steps 35, 36, 37, and 39 to the group.
  3. In smaller groups, students practice these steps on one another. Each student must be observed performing these steps.
  4. Co-facilitator reviews the steps and ensures understanding by all.
  5. Co-facilitator reviews how to record the exam of the organ systems learned at that session.
2 hrs.
3. Record a normal examination of the  heart.    
4. Use a stethoscope to examine the heart.
