Loyola University Medical Education Network Dissection of the Perineum

Step 1
Define the boundaries of the perineum.
Each of the steps in the dissection includes more specific instructions for the dissection of that step.

Step 2
Put the cadaver in a prone position with a block under the pelvis. Skin the region of the anal triangle and clean the ischiorectal fossa.
Step 3
With the cadaver in the supine position, spread the thighs and finish skinning the urogenital area. Dissect the contents of the superficial and deep perineal pouches.

Dissection of the Pelvis (Step 2)

Step 1
Recall that in an earlier dissection you blunt dissected the visceral contents of the pelvis in order to appreciate their relationships with the pelvis intact. The following dissection describes bisecting.
Each of the steps in the dissection includes more specific instructions for the dissection of that step.

Step 2
Bisect the pelvis and remove one limb. (At this point, refer back to the dissection of the perineum and complete this before bisecting the pelvis)
Step 3
Demonstrate the parts of the viscera that have been bisected.
Step 4
Dissect the branches of the internal iliac arteries and nerves on the lateral wall of the pelvis.
