Abdomen Objectives

Objectives to the Study of the Abdomen

These objectives are meant to assist you in learning the anatomy of the abdomen. It is assumed you are familiar with the anatomical components (i.e., viscera, arteries, nerves, muscles etc.).

  1. Describe the surface anatomy and projection of viscera on the anterior abdominal wall and back.
  2. Explain the relationships of the fascial layers to the muscles and peritoneum.
  3. Demonstrate the extent of the inquinal canal, its boundaries and contents.
  4. Describe the distribution of the peritoneum and the formation of mesenteries, ligaments and omenta.
  5. Summarize the embryological development of the GI tract and understand its rotation.
  6. Describe the anatomic constituents and relationships of the viscera.
  7. List the blood supply of the abdomen and learn important anastomoses.
  8. Demonstrate the biliary and pancreatic duct systems and their major variations.
  9. Describe the innervation of the abdominal viscera; what is visceral referred pain.
  10. Explain the lymphatic drainage in this region.
  11. List which viscera are intraperitoneal; which are retroperitoneal.
  12. Explain the portal circulation.
  13. Identify anatomic structures in radiographic studies including X-ray, CT scans and MRI films.
