- Learning Objectives
- Understand the dual role of medicine--- prolonging life where feasible and appropriate, or, providing comfort and relieving suffering in untreatable, hopeless or terminal conditions.
- Describe the common issues or symptoms encountered in dementia, persistent vegetative state and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, and the treatment options available.
- Know the basic skills required in palliative or end-of-life care: effective, “two-way” communication with patients and caregivers, management of pain and other symptoms, psychosocial and emotional support; and, coordination of medical and social support services.
