  • 1 hour lecture – End of Life Issues in Neurology
  • Learning Objectives
    1. Understand the dual role of medicine--- prolonging life where feasible and appropriate, or, providing comfort and relieving suffering in untreatable, hopeless or terminal conditions.
    2. Describe the common issues or symptoms encountered in dementia, persistent vegetative state and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, and the treatment options available.
    3. Know the basic skills required in palliative or end-of-life care: effective, “two-way” communication with patients and caregivers, management of pain and other symptoms, psychosocial and emotional support; and, coordination of medical and social support services.
