Dr. Pat Likes His Toys
It’s good to play with toys. Says visionary inventor, Dr. Avinash Patwardhan, founder and director of the Musculoskeletal Biomechanics Laboratory at Edward Hines, Jr. VA Hospital, “My premier invention, the Follower Load Technique, came as a result of myself and my daughter playing with her set of cascading balls. Creativity can come from any direction if you’re open to it.” This insight into our own, Dr. Patwardhan and the path that brought him to us is reproduced from an interesting article in the Orthopedics This Week website at: www.ryortho.com, search Dr. Patwardhan, and retrieve from Pictures of Success. It’s well worth the read!

No More Three Sport
Is a “sign of the times” when adolescent children are no longer playing multiple sports and concentrating on their one sport to the degree that overuse injuries are on the rise. Young athletes, because of the competition to excel in hopes of attaining college scholarships in later years, are incurring overuse injuries in addition to “adult-type” injuries. An article, authored by Dr. Pietro Tonino and published in the July 30 Sunday Chicago Tribune pointed out these and other concerns he witnesses in his specialty of sports medicine.

The Agony More Painful than Defeat
Drs. Rinella and Tonino were quoted in the Homer Glen Newspaper, The Sunday Star’s June 4 edition, in an article outlining the frequency and severity of injuries adolescent athletes are experiencing because of increased risks and demands on their developing bodies.  The article emphasizes the danger of kids’ feelings of invincibility due to TV coverage of extreme sports and making it look “easy” in addition to the risk of impacting the child’s growth plates resulting in arrested development.

Tissue for $1000.00
Questions: What are the Ropelike Bundle of Fibrous Tissue in the Center of Your Knee that Connects your Shinbone to the Back of your Thighbone?  Answer:  What is an ACL, and a part of your body that we (especially females) should make a concerted effort to protect.  The best way according to Pietro Tonino, MD is by “jumping like a guy”, so ladies make sure to bend your knees and hips when you land.  This is a sampling of the useful advice reported in an article published in Creators Syndicate national fitness column, Energy Express, June 7 issue.

100% Achieved in Secret Shopper Audits
Each month, every Loyola’s Ambulatory Dept. is surveyed by "secret shoppers", individuals who call from outside lines and pretend to be patients looking to find a new Physician at Loyola or pretend to be existing patients "lost" in the system. There are nine areas that are evaluated and depending on how well the Service rep. responds and her/his attitude toward the caller, point scores are given.

It is unknown when the audits take place. The Musculoskeletal Care Clinic usually score between 85% and 90%, because if you get one thing wrong, you missed your chance for a perfect score. In January they were at 92% and in February achieved 100%!
