He recently treated a WCPW Wrestler who presented him with a signed autographed t-shirt. Dr. Evans treated the human spirit of the "MEANEST MAN ALIVE".

who practice at Loyola University Health System featured prominently in the January 2006 Chicago magazine listing of the area’s top physicians. Out of 350 physicians representing 55 commonly consulted medical specialties, 38 Loyola physicians were cited in 27 specialties.

At the 11:15 lunch seating on Thursday, 12/15, PM&R Residents had a winning streak. Randy Calisoff won a $25 gift card to Carson's, Chirag Kalola won a $25 gift card to Sears and not to be outdone, Kelvin Franke won the grand prize for the seating, the $250 gift card for Best Buy. At the next seating Leslie Manion won a $25 gift certicificate to the Lettuce Entertain You Restaurants.
Former faculty Paul Lento and his wife Tracey welcomed their second child, a son Benjamin [ photo ] on 12/10. Big sister Delaney [ photo ] is thrilled.
Production of the 2006 Journal of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and Rehabilitation has begun. Resident editor Hobie Summers, and section editors Josh Snyder, Caroline Tiglio, Swathi Mothkur are working with editor Michael Pinzur, MD and Debora Pinzur and art director Patrick Carrico to produce the current volume. This year along with the academic articles will be articles on “Leadership in Medicine”. Deadline for inclusion in the Journal is February 15th.

Dr. Alexander Ghanayem just returned from teaching an instructional course in San Diego, California on December 3-4, at the Cervical Spine Research Society. He was a section moderator on a debate on “What to do with a Asymtomatic OS Odontiodium?”, and presented on Laminoplasty.
Dr. Michael Stover is presenting at an AO Advanced Course in Operative Fracture Management in Davos Switzerland on December 11-16, 2005. His multiple topics include Distal Femur Fracture and a Debate on DVT Prophylaxis.
Two of the 3rd year PM&R residents have had their abstracts accepted for the Association of Academic Physiatrists conference in Daytona, FL, in March of 06. Chirag Kalola will be presenting "Acquired Nonmalignant Tracheosophageal Fistula as a Unique Cause for Pneumonia in a Spinal Cord Injury Patient: A Case Report", and Prem Bajaj will be presenting "Spontaneous Spinal Cord Infarction with Resulting Paraplegia in a Patient Found Unconscious in an Abnormal Body Position after Taking Excessive Sedatives: A Case Study".

The Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and Rehabilitation announced its annual “Service Excellence Award” on Wednesday December 7, 2005. The award is given annually to recognize and reward one individual whom the faculty believe has provided outstanding service to the department. The recipient of the award is chosen from non-professional, non-managerial support staff. Dianne Tensley a service rep in LOC was the recipient of this year’s award.
Both of the senior podiatry residents had their abstracts accepted for presentation at the 64th Annual Scientific Seminar of the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons. Scott Rogers will be presenting "A Retrospective Review of Idiopathic Toe-Walking". Caroline Tiglio's work is entitled "Tibiocalcaneal Arthrodesis for Carpal Tarsal Osteolysis". The meeting takes place March 20-24, 2006 at Mandalay Bay, Las Vegas, Nevada.
The new Loyola Center for Health at Homer Glen is up and running. Both Dr. Napolitano and Dr. Ahn are seeing patients at this location, and are looking forwards to referrals.
Week of November 28th, 2005
Dr. Michael Priebe will join the department in the Division of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation effective December 1st. Dr. Priebe will be mainly located on the 5th floor rehab unit. More details to follow.
This year, the academic department, donated three baskets of food to SSOM Ministry. The baskets were distributed to families in the area for Thanksgiving. Thanks to all who supported this project.

Dr. Fabio Batista, and Dr. Michael Pinzur co authored an article published in the November 2005 Foot & Ankle International Journal. The article is titled “Cutaneous Thermal Sensitivity in Diabetic Neuropathy.”
Orthopaedics Today included Dr. Michael Pinzur when they assembled an expert panel to participate in a roundtable discussion on the new approaches to special footwear. The article includes information on orthoses, the merits of off the shelf vs. custom, rigid vs. soft unsoles and when to move to full shoe modification. Week of November 13th, 2005
Dr. Terry Light, Department Chairman and program director of the Orthopaedic Surgery residency program was a finalist for the Parker J. Palmer "Courage to Teach" Award from the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). The award is limited to a potential pool of 7,800 programs directors in the nation, and is awarded to 10 recipients a year. This is the first award of its kind given to program directors by the ACGME. Recipients are selected based on a demonstrated commitment to education with evidence of successful mentoring, program development and improvement. Dr. Hopkinson nominated Dr. Light for this award, and Dr. Slogoff and Orthopaedic Surgery residents in this program wrote letters of support.
The Dobozi partnership reports that it sold its' first weanling, a foal out of Abba Gold and Forest Wildcat. The foal was born in late March. The department is expecting a donation to the Dobozi fund soon. [photos 1 2 ]
Week of November 6th, 2005
Dr. Steve Gnatz was recently installed as the 67th President of the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at its 2005 Annual Assembly in Philadelphia. Founded in 1938, the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation is the preeminent professional association in PM&R with over 7200 members. Fellowship in the Academy is limited to Board certified Physiatrists, however, the Academy also has memberships for Associates who are not yet Board certified, Residents in PM&R, and medical students. The main activities for the Academy are in the areas of professional development, continuing education, and advocacy on issues of importance to it’s members and the patient population they serve. Dr Gnatz’ term runs from 2005-2006 and will terminate at the next annual meeting in Honolulu.
John Callaci PhD has officially been appointed as Research Assistant Professor in the Dept of Orthopaedic Surgery and Rehabilitation effective November 1, 2005.
The Sports Medicine Update that was held over the weekend was a success. In addition to presentations given by the course directors, Drs. Jayanthi and Tonino, department faculty Drs. Evans, Gnatz, Harrington, Light, Lomasney, Miller, Stirling and Rottier also presented. Guest Faculty included Joannie Essenmacher, DPT, former WTA Tour Physical Therapist, Bob Hoppenstedt Tennis Coach and lecturer, Douglas McKeag, M.D., Director IU Center for Sports Medicine, and Mark Pfeil, PT, Former Head Athletic Trainer Chicago Bulls.
After no labor and almost 6 minutes into the c-section, John Randolph Oakey [ Photo ] came into the world on November 3rd weighing in at 8 1/2 lbs. Jack and his mom are doing fine and dad can't wait to get back to his pre-pregnancy weight.
Judy and Rey Bosita are proud to announce the birth of their first son, Ethan. He was born November 3rd, 2005, weighing 6 lb, 14 oz with length of 19.5 inches. Baby and mom are both doing very well.

The Chicago White Sox brought the World Series trophy back to Chicago to celebrate the team’s victory over the Houston Astros in the 2005 World Series. Congratulations to the team and to the city for a long-awaited victory for baseball fans!
Dr. Sage gave Gina Ordonez (a.k.a. Twinkle Toes) the “thumbs up” to return to work. She will return on Tuesday, November 1st.

Two of the department faculty will be honored on Tuesday, November 22nd at the Annual Faculty Meeting. They are among 10 Medical Center Faculty who will be honored for 25 years of service. Dr. Terry Light, The Dr. William M. Scholl Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery and Chairperson and Dr. Frederick Wezeman, Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery and Rehabilitation. A reception will follow the meeting in the Atrium of the Medical School.
This year, the department’s entry to the 10th Annual Pumpkin Decorating Contest has a Sports Medicine theme. Our entry [photo] will be submitted Monday, October 24th. Winners will be announced Thursday, October 27th at 3 p.m. Thank you to everyone for their contribution in putting together our entry.
Congratulations and Best Wishes to Dr. Harold Schock and his wife Katie. They were married Saturday, October 8th in Northern Michigan and plan for a honeymoon in February.

Dr. Doug Evans & his wife Georgia welcomed baby Riley Brynne Evans on October 10, 2005 at 1:25 in the afternoon. Riley was a healthy 8 lbs 12 oz. and 21 ½” long. Mom and baby are both doing great. Everyone is home now and big brother Aidan is learning to cope with the new intruder, although he still isn’t happy about it!

The AAOS has a unique program established in December 2001, called the Leadership Fellows Program. The LFP Program provides leadership training and mentorship for younger members who wish to develop their volunteer or leadership skills and become active in the AAOS. It is designed to develop a group of trained volunteers who can assume leadership roles in the AAOS in the years ahead. Alexander Blevens, Orthopaedic Surgery Graduate Class of 1990, participated in the 2005/2006 program. The class of 2006/2007 has been approved. Dr. Melvyn Harrington, of our faculty, and Dr. Michael Freehill, Orthopaedic Surgery Graduate Class of 1999, will participate in the 2006/2007 program. The new class of Fellows will be introduced at the 2006 Annual Meeting in Chicago.
This year the theme of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and Rehabilitation is Leadership in Medicine. The deadline for all articles is March 1, 2006. Your adherence to the deadline is appreciated. Patrick Carrico, Debora Pinzur and their editorial staff have to put together a 100+ page book with a fixed deadline. This year there will be assistant section editors Josh Snyder MD, Caroline Tiglio DPM and Swathi Mothur MD, for each department section. Hobie Summers, MD is the Resident Editor.

Please welcome Leslie Manion, RN, BSN to the department. Leslie is fully funded by research grants and 100% of her effort is dedicated to those projects. Leslie was formerly at Rush for fourteen years as a nurse clinician and research nurse with the department of orthopaedic surgery. She and her very active 10 year old daughter, Jennifer, live in Elmhurst. She enjoys sewing, gardening, and reading in her spare time.

Patrick O’Leary’s resident research paper won the 2005 outstanding paper award at the North American Spine Society Meeting with his resident research paper “Response of Charite Total Disc Replacement under Physiologic Loads: Prosthesis Component Motion Patterns” Congratulations to the entire spine Biomechanics Lab. The paper had a monetary award, which will go to fund further spine research at the VA.
Dr. Robert Bielski was in Washington, DC October 7th to 9th giving presentations on Maternal Awareness and Use of Folic Acid at the 2005 American Academy of Pediatrics National Conference & Exhibition.

Sung Ahn, DO, PM&R, presented a poster at the American Association of Neuromuscular & Electrodiagnostic Medicine, in Monterey, CA, from September 21-24, 2005. His poster, titled "Change of maximum bite force and trigeminal nerve repetitive stimulation amplitude after isometric exercise in Myasthenia Gravis" won both the President's Award (top prize), and Jr. Recognition. Both of these awards included a monetary payment.
Dr. Frederick Wezeman is one of five finalists that have been nominated by the Class of 2008 for this year’s St. Luke’s Day Teacher of the Year award. He was nominated because of his commitment to medical student education and his consistently outstanding style of teaching. The teaching awards will be presented at the St. Luke’s Day Dinner Dance on October 21st. All 5 finalists get a free dinner.
Steve Gnatz, MD presented a lecture on "Therapy Caps" at the American Congress of Rehabilitation Medicine, at the Westin Hotel, Chicago, on September 29, 2005. This was part of a course on the effects of changes in healthcare financing on rehabilitation services for Medicare patients.
Dr. Pietro Tonino left September 27th to speak at a three-day conference at the University of Bologna in Bologna, Italy. His presentation is on Throwing Injuries in Athletes.

The 19th Annual Callahan Lecture on Musculoskeletal Trauma is being held this week on Thursday. Dr. James Nepola of the University of Iowa Hospitals is the guest speaker. His topics are The Orthopaedic Surgeon and EMTALA; Where Are We Today? , Adjuvant Therapies for Fracture Union; Science behind the Stimulation, and External Fixation in 2005; Past Present and Future. Lunch will be served in the ALUMNI lounge SSOM following the lecture.
National Rehabilitation Awareness Week begins September 19th. Rehabilitation services will participate by highlighting rehab patients and recognizing the contributions of rehab professionals through a series of activities. Some of the highlighted events include: Monday, 8:00 a.m. breakfast kick off along with “then and now” pictures, Wednesday “Build Your Own Sundaes” from noon to 1:00 pm, annual “Patient of the year celebration” from 2-5 pm on Thursday.

Dr. Timothy Rapp and Dr. Dierdre Ryan have passed both part one and part two of their orthopaedic boards and are now diplomats of the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery.
Dr. Ronald Sage will be presenting 2 lectures on Friday 9/16/05. The topics are "Partial Foot Amputations" and "Forefoot Trauma". This is being held at the Annual Business Meeting of the Illinois Podiatric Medical Association in beautiful Peoria, IL.
Former Orthopaedic Resident Alex Blevens, MD sent Dr. Light a note from Southern Mississippi. Alex Blevens was a Loyola resident who graduated in 1990. He is a member of the ASSH and the President of the Mississippi Orthopaedic Society.
Dr. Blevens reports that he and his family are safe and healthy. The Blevens family does not need any immediate assistance. They have food, shelter, water and electricity. Their house sustained damage, but did not flood. Dr. Blevens has been busy working at hospitals in Ocean Springs and Biloxi. His wife and family are helping in the clean up efforts. They are providing a home to a priest and his family because their house was destroyed.

The storm surge reached 25-27 feet above sea level in Ocean Springs and flooded homes several miles from the water. Many homes along the beach (including two of his partners’) were completely wiped clean down to the slab by crashing waves. Gas stations and stores are slowly opening up in Ocean Springs. The bridge between Ocean Springs and Biloxi has been destroyed and will not be replaced for at least a year. St. John’s Episcopal Church was undamaged and has been a source of comfort for its congregation and other residents of the city.
Dr. Blevens stated that many people have asked what they can do to help. He describes the difficulty of distributing supplies and help to those in need. There is limited gas, no available hotels, and all restaurants are closed. The professional relief workers are everywhere. The American Red Cross has two shelters in Ocean Springs and the National Guard is encamped at the Ocean Springs Airport. Habitat for Humanity is gearing up for a massive rebuilding effort to provide homes. Local churches are sheltering the homeless and providing food and clothing. Dr. Blevens asks that we “Pray for the poor, injured, sick, and homeless who have been so significantly affected by this storm from the coast of Alabama to Southern Louisiana, especially those who have lost loved ones and their homes.”

Kim Maciuszek joined the department on August 22nd. She is going to support Dr. Rinella, and the transcription system. Kim was formerly at the Northern Trust Company, and has worked in the medical transcription field for 10 years. She has twin daughters who are at the ripe old age of 18 and who know everything. She lives in Brookfield now after living in Chicago since birth. In her spare time, Kim enjoys traveling, fishing, music, and family time.
Cori Murphy started in the department on August 22nd. She is going to suppoJanuary 16, 2007tm">Harrington. Cori just graduated from Marquette University in May. She was a psychology major and had a family studies minor. She hopes to pursue a masters in School Counseling next fall at Loyola. She spent four months living in Rome, Italy last year and traveled around Europe, and is anxious to get back as soon as she can.

Dr. Stover and his wife Colleen are happy to announce the arrival of their first child, a daughter. Shannon Elizabeth Stover [photo] arrived on Friday August 26th. Ms. Stover and her proud parents are all doing well.
Dr. Frank Rottier and his wife Karen are proud to announce the delivery of a son. John Francis [photo] was born this morning August 29th at 4 AM. Congratulations are in order to the happy family.
We greet the arrival of grandson #2 for Dr. Edwin Harris, Jr. His son Jay, (Edwin James IV) and wife Keri are the proud parents of Edwin James Harris, V [photo]. He came into this world on Sunday, August 21st, weighing in at 6 lbs +. The baby was delivered right here at Loyola University Hospital!!
Wendy Lundquist and her family are proud to announce the arrival of Faith Annalise Lundquist [photo], born August 19th. Wendy was out of the hospital in time to take her boards on August 22nd.
David Mikolyzk MD, Ortho PGY2, and his fiancé Tricia Coccia, were married on Saturday at Ascension Church in Oak Park. The happy couple will honeymoon in Maui.
The department is happy to welcome June Viollt to the academic department. June started on August 15th, she will be supporting Drs. Bielski and Marra. Before coming to Loyola she worked at E.P.S. Rehabilitation, Inc. (a workman's comp company) in Tinley Park, IL, E.P.S. Rehabilitation was also the former employer of Debbie Lane. In her spare time June enjoys golfing, boating, automobiles, scrapbooking, and motorcycle and bicycle riding. She is a lifetime south sider and HUGE Chicago White Sox fan.
Fran Hughes is home recovering after an accident with a motor vehicle while riding her bicycle. Think of her and wish her a speedy recovery. Words of encouragement will aid her in recovery.

Rhonda and Rodney Stuck, DPM announce their two newest family members. Chai [photo] and Tazo [photo]. Poodles are their cup of tea. Tazo and Chai join 2 year-old toy poodle Maddie [photo]. Toy poodles are classified by size, a toy weighs less than 10 pounds at maturity, 5-6 pound dog is considered a tiny toy, and a 2-4 pound dog is called a teacup poodle.

The 16th Annual Seminar on Disorders of the Foot will be held on October 29, 2005 at the Stritch School of Medicine. The program begins at 7:30 am with a continental breakfast. The program features an “Update on Diabetic Foot Management” and speaking will be Drs. Sage, Stuck, and Ahn from PM&R, and Aulivola from PV Surgery. The second session will focus on “Podiatric Research at Loyola and Hines: Practical Applications” and will feature some of our former resident’s research projects. Frank Rottier, DPM sat for his written board examination after completion of his residency. Having met the required surgical cases performed he sat for his oral board examination. We are pleased to announce he PASSED. Congratulations to Dr. Rottier!

Julie Magallon, Senior Secretary in the Orthopaedic Academic office recently received a Magis Star. Julie is a native speaker and is frequently called upon to translate for Spanish speaking patients. No matter how busy Julie is she cheerfully helps her co workers.
Robert Bielski, MD is also the recipient of a Magis Star this month. A former patient credits Dr. Bielski for saving her life 6 years ago.
Wendy Bendfeldt, CCS-P celebrates her 2nd year anniversary on Thursday, August 11th. Wendy is currently attending LUC pursuing a BA in Organizational Development and Leadership, an accelerated program for working adults. The Scoliosis Research Society has selected Dr. Anthony Rinella to be one of the first recipients of the Edgar Dawson Traveling Fellowship. Dr. Rinella has been invited to Philadelphia to meet with Dr. John Dormans Chief of Orthopaedic Surgery at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia.
The Traveling fellowship is named after Dr. Ed Dawson who died in December 2003. Dr. Edgar Dawson was one of the world's most respected spine surgeons, author and educator.

The 2004 LUPF Physician Magis Spirit Awards were presented at the July 12 LUPF General Membership Meeting. This years awardees were Dr. Kurt Baker Watson, Assistant Professor Anesthesiology, Dr. Michael Bednar, Associate Professor Orthopaedic Surgery and Rehabilitation and Dr. Thomas Turk, Assistant Professor, Urology. Dr. Coleen Napolitano won the award in 2003.
Dr. Steven Rabin was elected Active Member of the American Orthopaedic Association on June 25, 2005. AOA members are chosen among prominent board certified orthopaedic surgeons who have been in practice for at least 5 years. The AOS identifies leaders, for the advancement of Orthopaedic Surgery. Dr. Michael Bednar was elected last year. Only 5% of Orthopaedic Surgeons belong to this elite group.

Dr Susan Walsh Psy.D. has joined the faculty in the Section of Rehabilitation. Dr. Walsh holds a primary appointment in the Department of Psychiatry.
Dennis Suzara has resigned the department; his last day will be July 19th. He will be attending Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine in the fall. Dennis began with the department in November 2003, on a part-time basis. He maintains several clinical research databases, and acts as the department liaison to the IRB. Dennis acts as resource to investigators pursuing new research projects. He completed a BS at University of Illinois at Chicago before coming to Loyola to do post-baccalaureate pre-medicine studies. He will be missed
Jim Ritter, Health Reporter from the Chicago Sun Times, interviewed Dr. Light on the topic of cell phone elbow. The article appeared in the Sunday July 4th Chicago Sun Times. Dr. Light’s quote may have been longer if he had agreed with the reporter’s point of view.

Dr. Steve Gnatz is in Iceland for the Kottke Society, which is a "think tank" for leaders of all of the professional societies in PM&R. He will be gone through Mon. 6/27. Dr. Gnatz is currently President-Elect of the American Academy of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation, and will take over as President at their Annual Assembly in Philadelphia, PA, Oct. 27-30, 2005.

Loyola is hosting a free Community Health Fair on Tuesday June 28th, at the Vision of Restoration Center at the Rock of Ages Baptist Church at 9th and Madison in Maywood from 10-3. Drs. Melvyn Harrington, Neeru Jayanthi, and Terry Light will be among the featured speakers at the event. Free health screenings for vision, blood pressure, pulmonary function and information on a variety of health issues will be available.
Amanda Willrich, DPM (Podiatry Class of 2004) and her husband, Elliott Hudson, DPM are proud to announce the birth of their daughter, Alice Evelyn Hudson [photo]. Alice was born June 11, 2005 - 2 minutes after her due date. Her parents report that in addition to being punctual she is perfect. Drs Willrich and Hudson are on staff at the University of Wisconsin Hospital and Clinics in the Madison area. All are doing well.

Dr. Coleen Napolitano was recently appointed to a 3-year term as written examiner for the American Board of Podiatric Orthopedics and Primary Podiatric Medicine (ABPOPPM). The ABPOPPM offers a comprehensive board qualification and certification process in podiatric medicine and orthopedics.
This year, the Orthopaedic Surgery residents gave Vicki Davidson-Bell a Service Excellence Award to thank her for the role she plays in the organization. Vicki joined the group in November of 2000. She has a bachelors degree in psychology from University of Illinois at Chicago Circle campus, a nursing degree from College of DuPage, and has a masters degree in adult nurse practitioner from Loyola.
Prior to joining the Ortho team she worked CV, ICU, nursing heart transplant study, and ER. In addition to providing medical care, she and her partner Barb Pudelek, coordinate care between disciplines, handle the psycho/social needs of patients, provide discharge planning and follow up, and address hospital system issues.
In accepting the award Vicki said that she considers herself very fortunate and honored to be working with such a wonderful group of people.
The Orthopaedic Surgery residents gave out two faculty awards this year one for outstanding faculty at the VA, one for faculty of the year.
The VA Outstanding Faculty Award was given to Dr. Timothy Rapp. Dr. Rapp joined the Faculty in 2003, after completing medical school at University of Iowa College of Medicine, and his residency and fellowship at University of Washington Medical Center. His specialty is Orthopaedic Oncology.
The Vice Chairman, Dr. William Hopkinson, received the Faculty of the Year award. Dr. Hopkinson graduated from SSOM before going to the Fitzsimons Army Medical Center for his residency. He has two fellowships, one in Sports Medicine from United States Military Academy, one in adult reconstruction from National Hospital for Orthopaedics and Rehabilitation. Dr. Hopkinson's award received a standing ovation from the assembled crowd.

Neeru Jayanth, MD, was recently accepted for a joint appointment in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and Rehabilitation. His primary appointment remains in the Department of Family Medicine.
After graduation from Stritch School of Medicine, Dr. Jayanthi completed his family practice residency at Rush/Illinois Masonic and then continued on at Indiana University Medical Center/Methodist Sports Medicine Center, where he completed a Family Practice: Sports Medicine Fellowship. Dr. Neeru Jayanthi is the son of Dr. Jayanthi Subbaro former Residency Program Administrator, Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation.
We look forward to working together with Dr. Jayanthi in the Sports Medicine Section.
Frank Rottier, DPM and his wife Karen are expecting their 1st child, a baby boy according to ultrasound [photo], this fall. We anxiously await the birth and wish the happy couple all the best.

The department is hosting the AOA / ASEAN (Association of South East Asian Nations) again this year. Annually Zimmer and AOA sponsor 5 of the best and brightest orthopaedic surgeons of South East Asia. This year their trip starts on Tuesday 5/31 in Chicago, they travel to Warsaw, Indiana, then back to Loyola, before traveling to visit the University of Wisconsin, Mayo Clinic Rochester, Mayo Clinic Scottsdale, UCLA and then USC before arriving in Huntington Beach California on June 22nd for the AOA 118th Annual Meeting. Sung Ahn, DO will join the Section of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation following his completion of an EMG Fellowship at the Mayo Clinic in August. Dr. Ahn is a graduate of Columbia University, and Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine. He completed a residency in PM&R at the Mayo Clinic before beginning his fellowship at the Mayo Clinic.

Douglas Evans, MD is going to join the Division of Sports Medicine in August. He is finishing a Sports Medicine fellowship at the University of Chicago, under the tutelage of Bruce Reider, M.D. Dr Evans is a graduate of Binghamton University, and received his MD and completed his orthopaedic Surgery residency at State University of New York at Buffalo.
Congratulations to Dr. Steven Rabin, Associate Professor and Co-Director of Trauma. He was elected the President of Illinois Association of Orthopaedic Surgery (IAOS) on April 15th. The President of serves for one year.

Legacy of Heroes comes to PBS in Chicago! The Legacy of Heroes program is a celebration honoring the heroism, dedication and sacrifices of the 600,000 military medical men and women who served in WWII, and highlights the contributions orthopaedic surgeons have made to advancements in care for trauma-related injuries.
On May 19, an edited version of Legacy of Hero’s called Wounded in Action will be airing on Chicago’s Public Broadcasting Channel, at 9:00 pm (CT). The film features some of our WWII veteran Academy members, taken back to the beaches at Normandy and Pearl Harbor where they served, to reflect on tragic memories, heroic moments, and the impact these experiences had on their lives.

Dr. Robert Bielski, Chief of Pediatric Orthopaedic Surgery and Dr. Kevin Forsythe, PGY4 Orthopaedic Resident accompanied Dr. Vietta Johnson, Chief of Orthopaedic Surgery at Provident Hospital on her 4th mission to the Bahamas. They donated their surgical expertise to Bahamian children with crippling conditions. There were 18 children with crippling disabilities and surgery was done on 6 of them. The April trip was a complete success and they received much gratitude from the children, families and the Crippled Children’s Committee of the Princess Margaret Hospital. Dr. Bielski and former orthopaedic resident Dr. Kevin Tu accompanied Dr. Johnson on her 3rd mission to the Bahamas, and performed 7 children’s surgical procedures at the same institution.

The department had a strong presence at the Midwest Podiatry Conference held April 7-10, in Chicago. Dr. Sage discussed Evaluation and Management of Foot Injuries, Management of Charcot Joints, Long-Term Results of Amputations and Diabetic Foot Care. Dr. Stuck gave an overview on the Basics of Wound Healing and the Risk Factors for Infection. Dr. Harris spoke on a variety of Podiatric Pediatric Issues, and Dr. Napolitano sat on the board of Examiners for the Mock Oral Exams.
The Podiatry Residents were successful in their research presentations at the MP conference held last week. Arush Angirasa, DPM won first place in the Medicine category and was the overall research winner with his project, "Intra-articular Sodium Hyaluronate Injection for Hallux Limitus". Taking second place in the Biomechanics category were former residents Elizabeth Kurtz, DPM and Wika Gomez, DPM. And Syed Khader, DPM took third place in Surgery Category for his research on "Comparative Analysis of Depuy TiMax Spider Plate™ and Mitek™ G2 Anchoring Device for Tenodesis following Retrocalcaneal Exostectomy".

Annually the North American Spine Society (NASS) selects three papers to receive the Annual Surgical Science Award. This year only one was chosen. The paper entitled "Response of Charité Total Disc Replacement under Physiologic Loads: Prosthesis Component Motion Patterns" was authored by Patrick O' Leary, MD (Ortho PGY 3) and co authored by Avinash Patwardhan, PhD, and other members of the Musculoskeletal Biomechanics Lab. Dr. Patwardhan will present the paper at the 20th Annual NASS Meeting in September in Philadelphia, PA. Dr. O'Leary will present the same research at the Spine Arthroplasty Society Meeting May 4-7 in NYC.
The Dobozi Partnership announces it's newest arrival, out of Abba Gold and Forest Wildcat. The foal had a very difficult foaling and got stuck in the mother at chest level after his front legs and head delivered. He then stopped breathing for about a minute before Abba gave one large push and delivered him. After resuscitation he was fine. The Dobozi's are calling him Lazarus, although the name "Stuck in You" suits him.
Pietro Tonino, MD celebrates 16 years at Loyola in April. He was recently promoted to Associate Professor, and has also been active in international orthopaedic education as a member of the International Commitee of the AAOS. He is the US liason for the first combined meeting between the AAOS and the AAOT (Argentinian Academy of Orthopaedics and Trauamatology) in December 2005, in Buenos Aires, Argentina. He and his wife Gwen have 4 children. They are sending their oldest daughter Jenna to high school this fall. Brian (12), Andrew (10) and Laura (8) are not far behind.
Kathleen Heneghan joined Loyola on April 3, 1995 on a part-time basis. She became a full-time secretary in July 1, 1996 in support of Drs Rabin and Pinzur. Kathleen has been married for 27 years to Irish born husband, Brendan. Together they have four (still dependent) children, twins: Maura and Brendan, 22 yrs., Carolyn 20, and Larry, 14 yrs. Kathy enjoys everything Irish ie: humor, music, sports, country, and beverages.

The department was well represented in the big easy at the 63rd Annual Scientific Conference of the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons, held in New Orleans March 9-13, 2005. Podiatry Residents and Department Faculty collaborated on three poster presentations. Arush Angirasa DPM (Podiatry PGY2) presented his poster "Intra-articular Sodium Hyaluronate Injection for Hallux limitus". Syed Khader's (Podiatry PGY2) poster was titled "Use of Fibular Bone Graft for 2nd Metatarsal Reconstruction after Lawnmower Injury: A Case Report". Syed Khader did not make the trip he was busy at home with the arrival of his daughter. Former residents Elizabeth Kurtz and Wika Gomez also had a presentation "Pediatric Lawn Mower Injuries: Observations on Treatment".
Syed Khader (Podiatry PGY2) and his wife Fatima are proud to announce the birth of their first baby, a daughter Sireen born on March 15, 2005. She weighed 8 lbs. and was 21 " long at birth. Her uncle is Syed Ahmed (Hines PGY1). Sireen arrived just in time for the 'Simply Signing Workshop - Signing for Babies" that is going to be held Wednesday, March 30, 2005 from 6:00 PM-8:00 PM at the Loyola Center for Health & Fitness.

Dr. Terry Light was recently presented a medal of merit, by the Lithuanian government. In July of 2004, he was decreed the Cross of the Knight, of the Order for services to Lithuania by president Valdas Adamkus for his continued medical service to the country. For the past 11 years Dr. Light has traveled to Lithuania with the Chidren's Hope Foundations to provide children with specialized medical treatment, and spends time teaching the country's surgeons to provide specialized services. Dr. Patrick Cahill accompanied him on his most recent trip.
Dr. Jerry Oakey (Ortho class of 2003) was the recipient of the 2003 Sofield Traveling Fellowship. His goals for the Fellowship were to experience different cultures and different methods of health care delivery. Jerry achieved these goals by visiting hand surgeons Professor Michael Tonkin of Royal North Shore Hospital in Australia and Professor LK Hung of Prince of Wales Hospital in Hong Kong. Highlights of Jerry's trip include meeting other fellows in Australia from all over the globe, enjoying the beauty of Sydney and the friendliness of the people, exchanging stories of health care delivery here in the United States with residents in Hong Kong, and attending a research conference focused on scientific studies at the university involving Chinese traditional medicine. Congratulate Dr. Tonino. Recently the University Committee on Rank and Tenure granted his promotion request. On July 1, 2005 he will be promoted to Associate Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery and Rehabilitation.

On Saturday 3-5-2005, The Daily Herald published a story "A Modern Miracle." The story featured Brian Melko, a patient of Anthony Rinella, MD., who had scoliosis surgery. Dr. Rinella spent 11 hours adding hardware to Brian's spine to allow the Glenbard North High School Student to stand upright. The procedure gave Brian nearly 5 more inches in height, and a "heavy back". According to Media Relations who pitched the story, the article clearly positions Dr. Rinella as a leader for these procedures. The story makes reference to five other doctors who saw Brian and refused to do the surgery because of its complexity.
Andy Barker, DO, (PG3) was presented with a Magis Award Star at the recent PM&R Residency meeting. This star was awarded to Dr. Barker for displaying care, concern & respect towards patients & staff during the initial transition from RIC partnership to the Loyola physician staff. Patients were especially complimentary of Andy's professionalism. Nursing staff nominated Andy, showing he consistently performs as a "team member".
Dr. Kevin Freedman, former Co-Director of Sports Medicine at Loyola, and his wife, Marlo, are the proud parents of Jake Tyler. The newest addition to the Freedman family arrived on March 3 at 8:04 a.m. weighing in at 6 lbs., 14 oz. and 19 ¼ inches long. Mom, baby, and sister Halie are all doing great and Dr. Freedman says his knees are perfect.
Frances Durkalec started working at Loyola in Orthopaedic Surgery on March 18, 1991. She and her husband, Frank, reside in Summit with their 3 single adult children, Christine, Julie and Frank III. Anywhere music is playing, you will find Fran and her husband on the dance floor. Swing and polka are favorites. She loves going to the opera and seeing almost any kind of live theatre performance with her daughters. Working out at the Fitness Center is another activity she enjoys.
Dr. Edwin J. Harris has been an attending staff member since March 19, 1979. He is also a Professor at the William Scholl College of Podiatric Medicine at Rosalind Franklin University. Dr. Harris has authored numerous publications and is currently the Section Editor for Pediatrics in the Journal of Foot & Ankle Surgery. Dr. Harris and his wife, Lynn, reside in Riverside. They have four children and one grandson.

The Annual Orthopaedic Academy Meeting was held in Washington DC last week. Annually, the Loyola/Sofield Orthopaedic Association hosts a reception on the Friday of the meeting. This year the meeting was held at Old Ebbitt Grill in the Heart of Washington DC. Drs Marra and Oakey planned and hosted the event. Dr. Pinzur was the official photographer. Sources tell me that "a good time was had by all".
The department was well represented at two physiatry conferences in February. PM&R residents presented their research and case studies at two national meetings.

Andy Barker, DO, (PG3), also presented a Case Study at the AAPM, titled: "The Efficacy of Sciatic Nerve Block on Pain Control Following Achilles Tendon Repair"
Mary Carlson's official hire date is March 7th of 1994. She worked in various departments in the float pool before joining the department in July 2003. Mary and her husband Rick reside in Westchester. They have two children. Son Michael is a graduate of NIU and Director of Business Development for TransPerfect. Daughter Christine is a recent college grad from WIU with a degree in Marketing.
Kathleen McShane is senior secretary to Drs. Bednar, Ryan and Rapp, and frequent contributor to this publication. She came to Loyola March 8th,1999 following a long and impressive career as a professional Mom, which was preceded by a not as long, but still illustrious career as a producer of TV and radio commercials. She is currently enrolled in LUC's School of Professional Studies pursuing a degree in Organizational Development and Leadership. Kathleen and her husband, Tom, a financial consultant, reside in Oak Park. They have three children: Robert, a 2004 graduate of LUC with a BA in English, who is currently living the starving writer's life of waiting tables at night and writing, writing, writing 10 hrs a day; John, a communications major at LUC, who communicates so well his part-time job is carding people at a Lincoln Park bar; and Kate, who is at Triton College pursuing an education in restaurant management.

Anthony Wei presented a poster at the 51st Annual Meeting of the Orthopaedic Research Society held February 20 - 23, 2005, Washington, D.C. His poster was titled "The Effect of Corticosteriod on Collagen Gene Expression in Injured Rotator Cuff Tendon". He did his research in consort with Dr. Wezeman and the Musculoskeletal Biology Research Laboratory. Anthony's Abstract will also be presented at the 2005 Annual Meeting of the Mid America Orthopaedic Association held in Amelia Island, Florida April 20-24, 2005
Hobie Summers has been nominated to attend the 3rd Annual AOA OREF - Zimmer Resident Leadership Forum (RLF), June 21 - 23, 2005 in Huntington Beach, California. The RLF was formed to identify leadership in Orthopaedics and ease the transition from Orthopaedic Residents to Orthopaedic Leaders. Greg Gramstad, MD was nominated to attend the first annual meeting held in 2003.
Sandy Bujak's daughter Jennifer and her husband Eric welcomed their 1st child, Melody Norah Lennington, on Saturday morning, 2/26 at 5:07AM. She weighed 7 lb. 3 oz. and is 21" long. Hidden under her little cap is soft blond fuzz.

Dr. Sage completed a podiatric surgical residency at Hines and Dr. Hugar's Surgical Center in 1978. He joined Loyola as a lecturer in January of 1981. In 1985 he became the Originator and Director of the Loyola Podiatric Surgical Residency Program. He was promoted to Assistant Professor in 1987 and to Associate Professor five years later, he became a Professor in 2000. Some of his other contributions to podiatry include being on the Board of Directors of the Foundation for Podiatric Education and a manuscript reviewer for the JFAS and JAPMA.
Monica L. Steiner, DPM completed her residency program at Northwestern University Medical Center, Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago, and practiced physiatric medicine through Marianjoy Rehabilitation Hospital and Clinics until 2000.
She became a member of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery & Rehabilitation in December 1990, on a part-time basis, and in April 1991 she received an appointment to the Medical Dental Staff of Loyola University.
Dr. Steiner began as a full-time clinician at Hines VA in 2000, and was appointed Associate Program Director for the PM&R residency program, in 2001. She took over as Residency Program Director in August 2003. In January 2004, she became Chief of Rehabilitation at Hines VA.
Dr. Steiner is a Diplomat for National Board of Medical Examiners, and Board Certified in physical medicine & rehabilitation, Electrodiagnostic Medicine & Pain Management.
