Call Responsibilities

General guidelines for service responsibilities are presented in order to maintain consistency in care and to assure maximum educational experiences for all residents on service.

Weekday Call:
(In House) – 7:00 AM – 6:00 PM

The PGY-2 class is responsible for covering in-house call responsibilities during the day. Every effort should be made not to bring the call pager to the operating room. When all PGY-2 residents (with the exception of the resident on the Hand Service) are unable to cover call responsibilities, the PGY-3 residents (with the exception of the Research Services) will assist the PGY-2 class. All residents must strictly adhere to the 80-hour Work Week provisions instituted July 2003.

First Call:
(In House) - 6:00 PM - 7:00 AM

  • All in-patients/Loyola and Hines VA
  • All consults on floor and in the Emergency Room at Loyola or Hines VA
  • Emergency Phone Calls
  • Admissions

The night-float resident will cover junior call responsibilities on Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. The PGY-3 research residents will alternate Thursday evening junior call responsibilities. The remaining PGY-3 residents will alternate Friday evening junior call responsibilities. Saturday and Sunday call responsibilities will be covered by the PGY-2 class. All residents must strictly adhere to the 80-hour Work Week provisions instituted July 2003.

Senior Call:
(Home)

  • All surgery at Loyola/Hines VA
  • Back-up to "First Call"
  • Answer questions from "First Call" resident
  • Back up Emergency Room Call

The resident on first call will notify the Senior Call resident of all admissions, transfers to a level of higher care (ICU), of all cases going to surgery, and consultations on patients admitted to other hospital services (Trauma, Medicine, Pediatrics, etc.) at the time that these events occur.

The Senior Call resident will consult with the attending on call, for all cases requiring surgery or any “problem cases”.

The Junior resident on call (1st call) should not directly consult the attending on call prior to discussing the case with the Senior resident on call. It is the Senior call resident’s responsibility to discuss all cases requiring surgery with the attending on call.
