The entire staff in Orthopaedics and throughout Loyola University Chicago mourn the loss of a wonderful lady, good friend, and dependable, conscientious employee of Loyola for over 20 years. Sandy was the Residency Coordinator for Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation for many, many years, and had retired just last year from our dept. Please keep her family in your thoughts and prayers.

In a study headed by John Callaci, PhD it was found that “steroid injections temporarily produce a molecular response in the tissue that is similar to that of a tendon injury, possibly making it more vulnerable to damage during this time. This is especially important because steroids give patients rapid pain relief. If a patient returns to rigorous activities right away, the weakened tissue may not be able to sustain itself.” John presented his findings at the 53rd annual meeting of the Orthopaedic Research Society in San Diego, California. Others that contributed to the study were Dr. Frederick Wezeman, Dr. Pietro Tonino, Dr. Dainius Juknelis, Dr. Anthony Wei, and Dr. Benjamin Sears.
Week of February 4th
Reuters Health has picked up a study being researched by Frederick Wezeman, PhD, principle investigator, Dept. of Orthopaedic Surgery & Rehab., regarding the impact of binge alcohol drinking and the increase in osteoporosis. Dr. Wezeman and associates observed that large quantities of alcohol led to a significant decrease in bone mineral density and bone strength. “If you are an alcoholic, you are damaging your skeleton”, advises Dr. Wezeman.
Dr. John Callaci, Asst. Professor in Orthopaedic Surgery and Rehabilitation with a joint appointment in Dept. of Cell Biology Neurobiology and Anatomy, is to be married to Martha Bautista, a graduate of UCLA. Ms. Bautista is a clinical research specialist at ICON. A 2007 wedding (date TBD) is planned.
