Section of Trauma

In 1995, Loyola University Medical Center achieved verification by the American College of Surgeons as a Level One Trauma Center, the first institution to be so recognized in the state of Illinois.

The Section of Trauma is the principal inpatient clinical teaching service of the division. Over 2,000 injured patients are admitted each year. The trauma service is staffed by full time faculty who are trained in trauma and have a keen interest in the field. They are committed to excellence in patient care as well as resident education and research. Resident staffing include Loyola surgical residents at both the senior and junior levels, as well as residents from other hospitals who are completing their requirements in emergency medicine.

While the Section of Trauma is focused on providing high quality trauma care, it is an educationally rich environment for faculty, residents, and students. Interesting or unusual trauma cases stimulate important discussions and educational opportunities at morning trauma rounds.

The Trauma Nurse Practitioner Program, started in 1992, is the first of its kind in the United States. It recognizes the increasingly important role of the nurse in assessing and coordinating care of patients with multi-system injury. In addition to research activities within the Section of Trauma, the Burn and Shock Trauma Institute provides complimentary support for clinical activities.
