Section of Surgical Critical Care
A distinct Surgical Critical Care
service has been established to meet the clinical needs
of the critically ill surgical patient, as well as the
educational needs of the students and residents. The
faculty members of the Division of Trauma, Surgical
Critical Care, and Burns are board certified in Surgical
Critical Care offered by the American Board of Surgeons.
Since its
inception, the Section of Surgical Critical Care has
been fully integrated with the activities of the trauma
service. Surgical patients who are critically ill or
injured remain the focus of activity, which is confined
to the surgical special care unit. Areas of emphasis
include ventilatory management, hemodynamic support,
nutrition, and comprehensive treatment of critical surgical
infections. Surgical critical care is an integral part
of the education of residents and students. Faculty
on the service currently serve in a consultative capacity
for the management of surgical patients (including the
surgical specialities) who require intensive care.
