Section of Minimally Invasive Surgery
Minimally Invasive Surgery is an integral component of the clinical practice
in the Department of General Surgery at Loyola University Medical Center.
In addition to the over 500 annual basic laparoscopic procedures
performed by the many members of the Department of Surgery, there are over 250
advanced procedures performed by the advanced laparoscopists in the department
annually. Commonly performed advanced procedures include gastric
banding for weight reduction, surgical treatment of gastroesophageal reflux
disease and achalasia, laparoscopic solid organ surgery including the surgical
treatment of benign and malignant diseases of the adrenal gland and splenectomy,
laparoscopic colon resection for benign and malignant disease, laparoscopic
pediatric surgery, laparoscopic inguinal and ventral hernia repairs, and
laparoscopy for diagnosis and management of other intra-abdominal malignancies.
In addition, in conjunction with the Department of Urology, approximately
50 donor nephrectomies are performed annually for the purpose of kidney
transplantation. Additionally, the
Department of Surgery offers a one-year fellowship program in Advanced Minimally
Invasive Surgery to general surgeons who have already completed their General
Surgery training, combining a very busy clinical practice of Minimally Invasive
Surgery with education of residents and fellows and ongoing research and
publication in the field of Minimally Invasive Surgery.
