Section of Colon and Rectal Surgery

The majority of general surgeons in the department perform routine colon and rectal procedures as part of their practice. More complex cases requiring added expertise are directed to the Section of Colon and Rectal Surgery, which is headed by a fellowship-trained colorectal surgeon. Patients with complications of inflammatory bowel disease and unusual GI malignancies in need of specialized interventions such as ileoanal anastomoses, J-pouches, continent ostomies, sphincter-sparing resections, and laser ablation are commonly treated by this section.

Interest in laparoscopically-assisted colon resection complements the Section of Minimally Invasive Surgery. A full range of colonic endoscopic diagnostic and therapeutic procedures are routinely performed, including balloon dilatation and polypectomies. Rectal ultrasound and gastrointestinal motility studies also are areas with which the section has considerable experience.

Specific research interests of the section chief currently include anastomotic healing and management of difficult enterocutaneous fistulae using fibrin glue.
