Laparoscopic Simulator Training for Residents
All categorical, untracked
preliminary as well as
the
urology interns undergo Laparoscopic Simulator Training as part of their PGY1
curriculum. Participation by other interns is optional. Training involves a
didactic portion in addition to a hands-on skills laboratory. The
didactic
portion of the training involves a web-based examination process after 2 months
of self-study of 9 different modules reviewing general laparoscopic principles.
The hands-on skills portion of the training involves monthly sessions with
the Director of Virtual Surgical Training. Residents have 24-hour access to the
skills lab for additional practice sessions. The skills lab is equipped with an
endoscopy simulator for flexible sigmoidoscopy, diagnostic and therapeutic
colonoscopy and bronchoscopy. In addition, there is a MIST-VR
system
with 12 core skills tasks with graded degrees of difficulty. Virtual tasks
mastered in the simulated environment are then transferred to the "real"
environment and additional basic laparoscopic skills (bead transfer, peg board,
cutting, intra-corporeal knot tying, etc.) acquired through the use of Trainer
boxes.
