Intra-Abdominal Transplantation and Hepatobiliary Surgery
Department of Surgery

The Intra-Abdominal Transplantation Program at Loyola University Medical Center provides comprehensive care by a highly specialized medical and surgical team. The program is also in the vanguard of efforts to advance the understanding of transplantation through its research and educational programs. The establishment of this program reflects major progress made in the last decade in the management of these often complicated patient conditions. There have been dramatic improvements in the outcome of transplantation with five year survival rates approaching 75% for liver transplantation and greater than 80% for renal transplantation.

The primary goal of this program is to provide optimal patient care and to further the understanding of transplantation through clinical and basic research. The Hepatobiliary Program is an integrated part of the Liver Transplantation Program. We have a multidisciplinary liver clinic in which patients with liver failure, primary and secondary liver tumors are seen. This conference involves radiologist, hepatologist and surgeons. We have a strong background in treating both liver tumors and biliary tumors. Through the multi-disciplinary approach we are able to provide patients with the optimal care to treatment of their hepatobiliary problem.

Our research centers on developing new techniques to resect advanced metastic liver tumors. In addition, we have developed improved techniques for treating both primary liver tumors and cholangiocarcinomas.
