Introduction

This catalog contains all approved undergraduate electives offered by the Stritch School of Medicine, the Loyola University Health System and Loyola affiliated hospitals. A maximum of 34 weeks of elective time are available of which 26 weeks are required to fulfill the elective curriculum graduation requirement.

Information concerning extramural elective opportunities available through other medical schools and institutions can be obtained from several sources including your faculty advisor, the Office of Student Affairs and from faculty members in areas of your interest. The national AAMC Extramural Elective Compendium containing information about opportunities through other medical schools is linked through Loyola's home page, and web sites for other schools' electives catalogs are provided in the compendium.

The elective curriculum affords students opportunities to select the courses most suitable to their needs and interests. Courses may be selected for several different reasons or to meet any of a variety of objectives. These may include the desire:

  • to gain broader experience and knowledge in clinical medicine
  • to strengthen medical education in an area of special interest
  • to test one's interest in a possible area of specialization
  • to complete research projects or take advantage of opportunities for other special training
  • to exercise responsibility and choice of self-determination of content of medical education

For these and other reasons including our own wish as a faculty and administration to present the diversity and excitement within medicine and medical education, we are pleased to present these selections with the hope that they will foster your education and be beneficial to you.
