The medical toxicology elective will provide focused experience with the evaluation and management of poisoned/potentially poisoned patients. The student will be based at LUMC and will participate in patient care on the medical toxicology consult service including regular direct contact with the attending. Issues of medical toxicology related to emergency preparedness will be covered. There may be additional educational activities at the Illinois Poison Center. The student schedule will include some evening/night/weekend phone availability. During the rotation, the student will be expected to complete a short project on a core topic of medical toxicology.
The objectives of the rotation are to 1) recognize the scope of medical toxicology, 2) describe the basic principles of medical toxicology patient care including presentation, clinical evaluation, antidote therapy, and enhanced elimination, and 3) identify the functions of poison control centers.
