This elective will help prepare students to become familiar with basic research methodology so that they can better assess findings in the medical literature and become more informed consumers of clinically relevant scientific information. Students completing this elective will be able to prepare a research protocol, incorporating the principles of good research design, subject selection, data acquisition, and statistical analysis; interpret the medical literature in a fashion that takes cognizance of the limitations of each individual research report; understand the basic principles of good statistical analysis; and produce clear, concise, and informative presentations of research findings for live audiences as well as for publication.
Students interested in a research elective should discuss their interests with the course supervisor. Students can participate in one of the ongoing research projects of the department or develop their own idea into a research protocol with the assistance of department personnel.
Students will be encouraged to take a "hands-on" approach to carrying out their research, including developing a working familiarity with the instruments used to generate their data. They should also develop some familiarity with the statistical methods used to evaluate their data.
Students will be encouraged to present their work at a Departmental meeting and, where appropriate, develop a presentation for a regional or national scientific meeting. Training in publication of the students' work will also be provided.
