Course Title: Prep for Internal Med Internship

Prerequisite: Preference given to students who will be entering Internal Med or Med-Peds residencies.

Pass/Fail Only. 

On the first day of the rotation, report to Debi at 8:30AM in Bldg. 102, Rm. 7608.

Description:

This elective is primarily aimed towards students who are pursuing post-graduate training within the field of Internal Medicine. The purpose of the elective is to provide in-depth training in areas that are common experiences in an internal medicine internship.


During this 4-week rotation, students will:
1. Discuss an evidence-based approach to and demonstrate competence in the immediate evaluation of patients presenting with each of the following: Shock; Hypertensive Urgency/Emergency; Respiratory Failure; Approach to Fever; Renal Failure; Oliguria; Brain Death; Organ Donation; Pronouncing Patients Dead; Chest Pain; Arrhythmia; Hemoptysis; GI Bleed; Abdominal Pain; Nausea/Vomiting; Diarrhea/Constipation; Mental Status Changes; Insomnia; Evaluation of Patient Falls; Electrolyte Abnormalities; Blood Product Do’s and Don’ts; Pain Relief; Toxicology/Alcohol Withdrawal; Hyper- Hypoglycemia; Seizures; Acute Liver Failure. 
2. Participate in small group discussions regarding and demonstrate an appropriate understanding of: Professionalism; Health Care Financing; Team Dynamics/ Conflict Resolution; Systems-Based Practice; Practice-Based Learning; Pharmacology; Statistics; Legal/Ethical Dilemmas; Medical Genetics; Medical Informatics; Patient Communication; Drug Rep Interactions; Stress Management/Sleep Deprivation. 
3. Review the common indications and basic techniques for common procedures including: Arterial Line Placement; Central Line Placement; Thoracentesis; Paracentesis; Pulmonary Artery Catheterization; Lumbar Puncture.

Method of Evaluation: Evidence of the student’s daily preparation, observation of small group participation, and performance on the final written exam.
