Description:

During the rotation, students will be exposed to various disciplines and modalities of complementary/alternative medicine through lectures, observations, and participation. The lecture and didactic sessions cover the principles and techniques of acupuncture, mind-body medicine, pediatric CAM, massage therapy, homeopathy, herbal medicine, and nutrition. Teaching sessions will be scheduled on Monday for all students. From Tuesday to Thursday, students will split up to rotate through various clinics including pain clinic, pediatric CAM, and acupuncture. Each student will have the opportunity to interview and examine one to two volunteer cases under my supervision and will be expected to prepare a presentation for discussion. In addition, each student will pick a topic on CAM and one on acupuncture for presentation. All students will reconvene on Friday for their presentations. Each student will have the occasion to experience first hand massage therapy.

1. The student will learn how to treat "the whole person"
2. The student will learn about the different modalities of complimentary/alternative medicine and the "what, when, and where" to refer patients for CAM
3. The student will be able to have first hand experience on a few of the CAM modalities including massage therapy and acupuncture
4. The student will learn about herbal medicine, nutrition, and homeopathy and be able to better advise patients on those topics

Method of Evaluation: 1. Level of knowledge attained
2. Two case presentations and discussion; two special topic presentations: one on acupuncture, the other on a selected CAM modality
3. Ability to interact, listen to, and address the whole person during the patient interview
4. Feedback from the other instructors
5. Promptness and diligence in attending teaching sessions and clinics
