Special Note: On the first day of the rotation, report to Karen at 8:30AM in Bldg. 54, Rm. 114C.
Description:

The student will evaluate patients referred to the General Medicine inpatient consult service. The student will participate in initial patient assessment which will include formulating a differential diagnosis and presentation of the patient to the senior resident and attending physician. The student will participate in the follow-up care for these inpatients and will spend approximately four hours per week in the outpatient preoperative consult clinic. Specific readings related to the types of patient problems encountered will be assigned and discussed.

Course Objectives: 1) To familiarize the student with medical problems that arise in patients hospitalized on non-medical services, i.e., on surgery, neurology, psychiatry, and ob-gyn. 2) To teach the student how to do a pre-operative medical assessment including delineating a patient's medical problems, risk assessment, and perioperative management recommendations.

Method of Evaluation: A written evaluation of the student's performance will be made by the resident and attending at the end of the rotation.
