Department: Otolaryngology
Course Number: ENT-401
Course Title: Otolaryngology: Gen Inpt/Outpt
No. of Students: 2
Site: LUMC
Supervisor: Gregory J. Matz, M.D.
Duration: 4.0 weeks
Periods Offered: Year round
Prerequisite: Available to third and fourth year students.
Special Note: Cancellation less than six weeks before starting date requires personal permission of supervisor.
Description: The objectives of this course are: 1) to provide each student with an introduction to the field of otolaryngology, 2) to teach the essentials of perioperative care and 3) to provide an opportunity for student involvement in the diagnosis and management of a variety of otolaryngologic disorders. This course will instruct each student: 1) through clinic evaluation, 2) inpatient perioperative management, 3) weekly departmental conferences, 4) daily patient ward rounds. The student will be expected to be a major participant in the otolaryngology service. He or she will participate in resident rounds, patient care and didactic conferences. The rotation is very busy, and student participation would be at the level of a subintern. Many medical students interested in pursuing otolaryngology as a career choose this elective. The student will meet with the ENT instructor once a week. (Wed AM)
Method of Evaluation: In addition to the student's performance and each of the above mentioned tasks, a general examination will be used to determine the overall final evaluation.
