ELECTIVE RESEARCH: BIOLOGICAL PSYCHIATRY:
Residents become actively involved in one of the ongoing research activities of the section or, in the case of residents with previous research experience, the development of their own research study. Recently, advanced residents have taken active roles in studies of PTSD and geriatric depression.

LUMC CARDINAL BERNARDIN CANCER CENTER PSYCHO-ONCOLOGY ELECTIVE:
The resident rotating exclusively at the Cancer Center is responsible for initial assessments on both inpatient and outpatient cancer patients. While the resident is under the direct supervision of the psychiatric attending physician and the psycho-oncology psychologist, the resident also is able to observe the assessment of patients by other team members (psychiatric attending, and clinical psychologist). The clinical population is vast and diverse. Treatment options include time-limited psychotherapies as well as psychopharmacologic approaches.

CONSULT PSYCHIATRY: ORGAN TRANSPLANT PSYCHIATRY PROGRAM:
Resident assumes responsibility for all consultation requests and outpatient transplant evaluations to assess suitability for organ transplant. Post-transplant consultation involves the same experience as that for standard consultation/liaison clinical activity. Additional experience on the ethical aspects of organ transplantation is also offered based on resident interest.

LOYOLA UNIVERSITY SEXUAL DYSFUNCTION TRAINING CLINIC:
The resident rotating through the Sexual Dysfunction Training clinic will spend a total of 50 hours in the training and treatment of couples with sexual problems. Each rotation begins with two didactic Friday sessions for training. Goals and techniques of therapy are outlined. The following 7 weeks (Mon/Tues evening) in dual sex teams, once weekly the resident treats a couple with sexual problems (brief sex therapy) under direct on-site supervision.

POST-TRAUMATIC STRESS DISORDER OUTPATIENT CLINIC ELECTIVE:
Residents work with a clinic population that is about 99% male, 75% of which are Vietnam Veterans. The incidence of substance abuse/dependence is 75%. Residents spend the majority of their time learning about diagnostic PTSD assessment, PTSD treatment (medication management and psychotherapy) and outcome evaluation methodology and practice. Involvement in research may include collaboration with Biological Psychiatry section.
