ELECTIVE
RESEARCH: BIOLOGICAL PSYCHIATRY:
Residents become actively involved in one of the ongoing
research activities of the section or, in the case of
residents with previous research experience, the development
of their own research study. Recently, advanced residents
have taken active roles in studies of PTSD and geriatric
depression.
LUMC CARDINAL BERNARDIN CANCER CENTER PSYCHO-ONCOLOGY
ELECTIVE:
The resident rotating exclusively at the Cancer Center
is responsible for initial assessments on both inpatient
and outpatient cancer patients. While the resident is
under the direct supervision of the psychiatric attending
physician and the psycho-oncology psychologist, the
resident also is able to observe the assessment of patients
by other team members (psychiatric attending, and clinical
psychologist). The clinical population is vast and diverse.
Treatment options include time-limited psychotherapies
as well as psychopharmacologic approaches.
CONSULT
PSYCHIATRY: ORGAN TRANSPLANT PSYCHIATRY PROGRAM:
Resident assumes responsibility for all consultation
requests and outpatient transplant evaluations to assess
suitability for organ transplant. Post-transplant consultation
involves the same experience as that for standard consultation/liaison
clinical activity. Additional experience on the ethical
aspects of organ transplantation is also offered based
on resident interest.
LOYOLA
UNIVERSITY SEXUAL DYSFUNCTION TRAINING CLINIC:
The resident rotating through the Sexual Dysfunction
Training clinic will spend a total of 50 hours in the
training and treatment of couples with sexual problems.
Each rotation begins with two didactic Friday sessions
for training. Goals and techniques of therapy are outlined.
The following 7 weeks (Mon/Tues evening) in dual sex
teams, once weekly the resident treats a couple with
sexual problems (brief sex therapy) under direct on-site
supervision.
POST-TRAUMATIC
STRESS DISORDER OUTPATIENT CLINIC ELECTIVE:
Residents work with a clinic population that is about
99% male, 75% of which are Vietnam Veterans. The incidence
of substance abuse/dependence is 75%. Residents spend
the majority of their time learning about diagnostic
PTSD assessment, PTSD treatment (medication management
and psychotherapy) and outcome evaluation methodology
and practice. Involvement in research may include collaboration
with Biological Psychiatry section.
