During the first two years of medical school, there are many opportunities to become involved in pediatrics. The primary opportunities are through the Pediatrics Club and the Neonatal-Perinatal Club. These two clubs focus their activities on various aspects of pediatric medicine and working with children and/or sick or premature infants.
The Pediatrics Club is planning to have
monthly meetings that will provide educational experiences including lectures
about disease processes affecting children, hands-on activities such as
medicine tasting, and panel discussions about career opportunities and
selecting residency programs. Other activities will include participating
in examining children at Community Health Pediatric Nights, shadowing
pediatricians and pediatric subspecialists (both medical and surgical),
and working with children hospitalized in our children's hospital. For
additional information, please contact the Pediatric Club President,
Jaclyn Battistoni at
JBATTISTONI@lumc.edu.
Newly formed this year, the Neonatal-Perinatal Club focuses on the application of the basic sciences (anatomy and physiology) learned in the classroom to the basic sciences used in the care of babies in the NICU. Activities include rounding in the NICU, looking at fetal ultrasounds with the high risk team, and reviewing interesting x-rays.
Other opportunities for pediatric activities include:
Reading, Writing and Recovery Program run by our school teacher Rich Taylor for hospitalized children;
Special Friends Program administered by the cancer center for children with cancer and their families;
IPM Mentoring Program administered by SSOM.
