There
are three full time board certified pediatric intensivists who provide
coverage for the Pediatric Critical Care Unit (PCCU). In addition, these
three faculty members coordinate the curriculum in critical care medicine
for the residents as well as our monthly morbidity and mortality conferences.
The
Pediatric Critical Care Unit is a state of the art, fourteen-bed unit.
The unit averages 750 admissions per year, divided between medical and
surgical cases. Residents are involved in the care of the majority of
admissions. Our residents spend three months in the PCCU, two the second
year and one in the third. The level of responsibility increases at each
rotation, concluding with the senior resident acting as the supervising
member of the team. Fourth year Loyola students have the opportunity to
complete their required acting critical care internship in the PCCU.
During
their PCCU rotations, residents focus on assessing, stabilizing and managing
critically ill patients. Teaching is continuously provided by the intensivists,
primarily at the bedside, although didactic teaching is also presented.
Medical conditions routinely encountered include: shock, sepsis, respiratory
failure, intracranial hypertension, heart failure, and inflicted trauma.
